Lighting is one of the most powerful tools in event décor. The same backdrop can look flat under ceiling lights and magical under warm, layered lighting.
Light the focal point first
The stage or backdrop should be the brightest part of the room. Uplighting from the floor adds color and depth, while front lighting keeps faces bright for photos and videos.
Layer the room
Combine three types of light:
- Ambient light, such as chandeliers or dimmed venue lights, for overall mood.
- Accent light, such as uplights and pin spots, for the backdrop and centerpieces.
- Decorative light, such as candles, lanterns or string lights, for warmth and sparkle.
Choose colors carefully
Warm white flatters skin tones and florals. Colored uplighting can match your theme, but strong colors on faces are less flattering. Test the lighting with your photographer’s needs in mind.
Plan the special moments
Cake cutting, first dances and entrances all benefit from a lighting change. Ask your venue about rules for candles, haze or cold sparkler effects before including them.
Check power and safety
List the outlets, cable routes and circuit limits early, especially for outdoor or tented events.
